Deuteronomy Chapter Four

   Chapters Two and Three are a continued recounting of history. At this time you might find them somewhat boring. And for our purposes you do not need to read them here at this time. 

   The Book of Deuteronomy records four lectures delivered by Moses to the Israel people. 

  1. A review of Israel's History - Chapters 1-4
  2. A restatement of The Ten Commandments and how to apply them to a vast array of situations. Chapters 5-25
  3. How nations are blessed in every way if they do what is right in God's eyes. Likewise, how God will curse nations if they violate His laws, or if they chose to live by a different standard. Chapters 26-28
  4. Moses final words.

   Chapters one thru four contain Moses first lecture. It was history lesson. Likewise, to follow Moses example, this course began with a history lesson.  Moses spoke of Israel history, we spoke of American history. 

   Chapter four begins, 1. Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do [them], that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you. 2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

   Why were they to hearken to the statutes and judgments. The answer, that they might live. Now let's move forward to  Deuteronomy Chapter 8 and hear more about living.

Deuteronomy Chapter 8:1-11

1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, [and] to prove thee, to know what [was] in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every [word] that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.  

4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, [so] the LORD thy God chasteneth thee. 

6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. 

7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; 

8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

Notice three points;

  1. God tested the Israelites for forty years. 
  2. Why? (To) know what [was] in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no
  3. To learn that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

And in the New Testament, here is Luke 4:1-4

Luke 4:1-4 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 

2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 

3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 

4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
